The Hundred Years\u2019 War had cut the kingdom in two: the Treaty of Troyes of 1420 had disinherited the dauphin Charles in favor of the king of England, and the Burgundians held Paris. At about thirteen, she told her judges, she began to hear voices she attributed to Saint Michael, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret. In February 1429, after two refusals from Robert de Baudricourt, she left Vaucouleurs for Chinon, where the dauphin received her and had her examined at Poitiers. She entered Orl\u00e9ans on April 29, and the siege was lifted on May 8, 1429. After Patay on June 18, she brought Charles VII to Reims, where he was crowned on July 17, 1429. The attack on Paris failed that September. Captured at Compi\u00e8gne on May 23, 1430 by the Burgundians and sold to the English, she was tried at Rouen by a Church court under Pierre Cauchon, and died at the stake on May 30, 1431, at about nineteen.
