Founded in 2021 by former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/openai-lance-gpt-5-disponible-gratuitement-sur-yiaho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI<\/a> staff, Anthropic quickly became a key player in the AI race with its Claude model. <\/p>\n<p>But amidst noble ambitions, controversies, and technical challenges, their journey is far from a fairy tale.<\/p>\n<p>The Yiaho team delved into this epic, from its origins to today, to understand what makes Anthropic a unique company&#8230; and what makes it imperfect.<\/p>\n<h2>A Departure Amidst Disagreement with OpenAI<\/h2>\n<p>It all started with a split. In 2021, Dario and Daniela Amodei, respected figures at OpenAI, left with a handful of colleagues, including Tom Brown and Sam McCandlish. Why? OpenAI, fueled by Microsoft&#8217;s money, was rushing into commercialization with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/free-chat-gpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<p>The Amodeis, however, were concerned. They feared that this rush for ever more powerful AIs would neglect the risks: bias, misinformation, or even malicious uses in sensitive areas like defense. As early as 2016, Dario had co-authored an article on the dangers of AI, <em>Concrete Problems in AI Safety<\/em>.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>This seed of concern grew into Anthropic, a company promising to do AI differently: safer, more transparent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Claude Enters the Scene<\/h2>\n<p>In 2022, Anthropic unveiled Claude, a language model named after Claude Shannon, the father of information theory.<\/p>\n<p>The idea? To compete with ChatGPT, but with a touch of virtue. Claude is designed to avoid toxic content, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/algorithmic-bias-in-ai-what-is-it-and-why-does-it-happen-when-code-goes-off-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">algorithmic bias<\/a>, and unreliable responses. Several versions have been released.   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Claude: Launched in beta on Slack in 2023, then accessible via claude.ai, it captivated users with its often relevant, sometimes witty responses, and its ability to cite sources.<\/li>\n<li>Claude 2: Launched in July 2023, it improved the recipe.<\/li>\n<li>Claude 3 (Haiku, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/anthropic-unveils-claude-3-7-sonnet-better-than-chatgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sonnet<\/a>, Opus): Launched in March 2024, it competes with the market leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But Claude isn&#8217;t perfect: it can still make mistakes, and its sometimes overly polite tone annoys some users who find it less daring than its competitors.<\/p>\n<h2>Constitutional AI: A Great Idea, Mixed Results<\/h2>\n<p>Anthropic stands out with an original idea: Constitutional AI. Rather than relying solely on human feedback to correct its models, Claude follows a &#8216;constitution,&#8217; a set of rules inspired by texts like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The AI self-evaluates to remain useful and harmless. On paper, it&#8217;s appealing. In practice, it limits some missteps, but not all.    <\/p>\n<p>In 2025, a law firm discovered that Claude had invented a reference in a legal brief, a troubling reminder that even an &#8216;ethical&#8217; AI can hallucinate. Interesting, but for now, these efforts remain technical and not very accessible to the general public. <\/p>\n<h2>Who Invests in Anthropic?<\/h2>\n<p>Anthropic wouldn&#8217;t exist without significant financial backing. Here are the main investors: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jaan Tallinn (Skype) invested $124 million in 2021,<\/li>\n<li>Sam Bankman-Fried, $500 million, before FTX&#8217;s collapse cast a shadow over this investment.<\/li>\n<li>Amazon $4 billion and Google $2 billion, providing Anthropic with colossal resources via AWS and Google Cloud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In February 2024, Menlo Ventures valued the company at $18.4 billion. These funds allow it to compete with giants, but they raise questions: how can it remain independent with such powerful investors? In May 2024, Claude arrived in Europe, with decent support for French, German, and Spanish. But the company must navigate a complex world. AI regulations, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/ia-act-discover-european-regulation-for-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European AI Act<\/a>, impose constraints, and Chinese competition, with players like SenseTime, advances without the same ethical scruples.   <\/p>\n<p>Anthropic also has to manage expectations: its discourse on safety is appealing, but some see it as a marketing stance to stand out in a saturated market. And when Claude refuses certain conversations deemed &#8216;problematic,&#8217; it raises debates about censorship and freedom of expression. <\/p>\n<h2>Anthropic, Between Ideal and Reality<\/h2>\n<p>Anthropic is the story of a team that wanted to reinvent AI with a moral compass, but is clashing with the realities of a ruthless industry. Their constitutional approach and efforts to make AI interpretable are interesting steps, but they are not immune to errors, controversies, or compromises. <\/p>\n<p>Anthropic shows that a more responsible AI is possible, but it also reminds us that perfection is illusory in a field where technology, money, and ethics intertwine.
