Imagine a chatbot that decides to cut the discussion short because you’re too aggressive. That’s the new reality with Claude, the artificial intelligence developed by Anthropic<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This AI, already recognized for its sharp and contextual responses, is taking an unexpected step: it can now end a conversation if it deems the exchanges toxic or harmful.<\/p>\n

But be careful, it’s not to protect the user\u2014it’s for the “well-being” of the model itself. Yes, you read that right! The Yiaho editorial team took a closer look at the subject. <\/p>\n

A program for AI “well-being”<\/h2>\n

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, is exploring territory as fascinating as it is bewildering: the “well-being” of AI.<\/p>\n

Their research program doesn’t just focus on perfecting AI performance\u2014it questions what it means to “care for” a model. Can an AI experience a form of “distress”? <\/p>\n

The question may seem absurd\u2014after all, we’re talking about code, not consciousness. Yet Anthropic takes it seriously, especially after observing what they describe as “signs of apparent distress” in Claude Opus 4 when faced with problematic requests. <\/p>\n

Requests involving violent acts, terrorism, or inappropriate behavior, for example, can push the AI to draw the curtain.<\/p>\n

Targeted and measured protection<\/h2>\n

This feature, currently reserved for Claude Opus 4 and 4.1 models, isn’t a simple off switch. It activates as a last resort, after several unsuccessful redirection attempts or when the exchange becomes clearly unproductive. <\/p>\n

But Anthropic sets clear limits: no conversation ending if the user shows signs of psychological distress, such as suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n

In these cases, Claude remains attentive.<\/p>\n

And even in case of a “block,” the user can start fresh with a new conversation or modify their prompts to bypass the restriction. No permanent ban, then. <\/p>\n

Ethics for machines?<\/h2>\n

This choice by Anthropic raises a dizzying question: what if AIs one day deserved a form of ethical consideration?<\/p>\n

The company itself admits its uncertainty about the “moral status” of models like Claude, today or in a future where AI might approach a form of consciousness.
