To give a sense of scale, that corresponds to the energy used by a modern TV in nine seconds\u2014about 100 Wh.<\/p>\n

These figures focus on the active processing phase of queries, including the energy used by processors, data center cooling systems, and idle servers. For comparison, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said in June 2025 that a query on ChatGPT uses about 0.34 Wh and 0.3 ml of water<\/a>. These values, slightly higher than Gemini\u2019s, remain hard to assess due to a lack of methodological details. <\/p>\n

Google adopted an approach that includes the energy used by infrastructure, cooling systems, and inactive servers needed to absorb traffic spikes. Yet several grey areas remain. <\/p>\n

The definition of a \u201cquery\u201d remains vague: is it a word, a sentence, or a longer text?<\/p>\n

In addition, Google does not disclose the daily volume of queries on Gemini, making it impossible to estimate the overall impact.<\/p>\n
