Apertus, a large language model (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/what-is-a-large-language-model-llm-in-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LLM<\/a>) developed by a consortium of public institutions:   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL),<\/li>\n<li>ETH Zurich,<\/li>\n<li>The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project aims to redefine AI standards by putting openness, transparency, and the common good at the heart of its development.<\/p>\n<h2>An AI designed for the public good<\/h2>\n<p>Apertus, whose name means \u201copen\u201d in Latin, embodies a vision: making AI a public infrastructure, accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike giants like ChatGPT, this model isn\u2019t trying to compete on raw performance, but to offer a reliable and ethical alternative. Comparable in capabilities to Meta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiaho.com\/en\/mark-zuckerberg-announces-65-billion-for-llama-4-and-meta-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Llama 3<\/a> model released last year, Apertus stands out for being fully open source. <\/p>\n<p>Its creators have made available not only the model weights, but also the training source code and complete documentation, all under the Apache 2.0 license, accessible via the Hugging Face platform.<\/p>\n<p>This choice of openness serves one goal: enabling organizations\u2014whether businesses, academic institutions, or governments\u2014to adapt the AI to their specific needs. Available in two versions, one with 8 billion parameters and the other with 70 billion, Apertus can be deployed locally, ensuring that processed data stays on the user\u2019s servers. <\/p>\n<p>This feature makes it especially attractive for sensitive sectors like finance, healthcare, or law, where data confidentiality is crucial.<\/p>\n<h2>Multilingualism and ethics at the heart of the project<\/h2>\n<p>Apertus training is based on a massive corpus of 15 trillion tokens, collected from public sources on the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, 40% of this data comes from non-English content, covering more than 1,000 languages.
