Microsoft: Generative AI, but not Responsible?

OpenAI

Microsoft is disbanding its “ethics and society” team dedicated to responsible artificial intelligence, despite its commitment to designing AI products and experiences that are safe to use.

A “Responsible” AI Team Disbanded

The team responsible for AI ethics and safety was really crucial for ensuring new technologies were developed responsibly, but unfortunately, Microsoft had to reduce the team to just seven people before dissolving it in March. It’s a real shame, as this leaves a significant void in the company’s operations.

However, Microsoft had still increased the number of people responsible for enforcing responsible AI principles over the past six years. Nevertheless, some members of the “ethics” team told journalists that their primary role was to translate Microsoft’s principles into easy-to-follow rules for developers. They also focused on identifying risks associated with using ChatGPT and other tools created by OpenAI. This was really important to avoid the disastrous consequences of using AI without taking the necessary precautions.

Is This Really the Right Time?

Microsoft’s AI responsibility team was disbanded just as the company is fully embracing generative AI for products like Bing, Azure, Office, and Teams. They aim to outpace competitors thanks to their close ties with OpenAI, in which they’ve invested billions of dollars. However, some experts have concerns about the risks without this team dedicated to AI responsibility.

Snapchat’s AI isn’t quite there yet

Basically, it’s super important that AI is developed ethically and responsibly, and that its use aligns with the company’s values. The team’s dissolution therefore raises questions about what Microsoft will do to ensure the safety and ethics of generative AI use in its products and services going forward. But it’s not to say that Microsoft is abandoning responsible AI; the Office for Responsible AI continues to set principles for all development teams.

It’s just a matter of timing because there’s immense pressure to release OpenAI’s tools at lightning speed. In short, we need to find the perfect balance between innovation and responsibility to avoid negative impacts on society and ensure a sustainable future for AI.
