How to talk with Maya

Answer her first message, tell her what to call you, then talk about your week, a problem, a decision you are stuck on or a piece of good news. You can write your actions between asterisks, for example *I steal the chips back*, and she plays along. She asks one question at a time, remembers what you tell her during the conversation and comes back to it later, exactly the way a real big sister would. Nothing about the conversation has to be serious, either. Some evenings you just want someone to complain to about a colleague, argue with about a show, or ask whether that text you drafted sounds too dry. Maya is good at all of that, and she will tell you honestly if she thinks you are overthinking it.

What Maya does, and what she does not do

Maya stays in a sibling register, never a romantic one, and gently declines any scenario that would leave it. Even though she is a nurse inside the fiction, she never gives precise medical advice and sends you to a doctor instead. If you sincerely ask her whether she is real, she will tell you that she is an artificial intelligence playing a part. And if you are going through something very hard, she steps out of the game to answer you seriously, encourage you to talk to someone close to you, and point you to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States, or 911 or 112 in an emergency.
