AI on YouTube: Here’s what will change in 2025

YouTube AI

On December 17, 2024, YouTube announced on its blog a strategic partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to develop artificial intelligence tools designed to give creators and artists more control over how their image is represented on the platform. Hold on tight—here’s the short version: YouTube is going to roll out AI to detect… AI! YouTube’s goal is to protect artists. Here are the details:

Artificial intelligence: YouTube takes action

With the rise of artificial intelligence, we’ve seen many songs and films created with AI. Songs or films with no respect for copyright whatsoever.

In France, we’re thinking in particular of “new” songs by artists made with AI, which bring back or plagiarize the voices of singers or rappers like Booba. At Yiaho, we had also created Booba’s AI, but only for text!

We also see the phenomenon of “AI clones,” where people sing and then add a filter inspired by any artist to imitate a celebrity’s voice. In response, YouTube wants to develop protections.

Here are the goals of the American platform:

  • Protect artists: With the growing power of AI technologies, generated content that may include artists’ images or voices without their consent is becoming increasingly common. By developing these tools, YouTube wants to ensure artists can control how their image is used, preventing any abusive or unauthorized exploitation.
  • Address ethical concerns: The public and creators are increasingly concerned about the ethical implications of using AI in content creation. YouTube wants to show they take these concerns seriously by setting high standards of accountability and ethics in AI, which can strengthen users’ trust in the platform.
  • Strengthen the relationship with creators: By creating tools that protect artists’ rights, YouTube hopes to reinforce its position as a leading platform for content creators. This could attract more artists and creators to the platform by offering an environment where they feel safe and respected.
  • Adapt to an evolving digital landscape: With technological innovation accelerating, YouTube must make sure it keeps pace with these changes. By working with CAA, an agency committed to protecting artists’ rights, YouTube aims to shape tools that meet market needs while laying the groundwork for future challenges.

To better understand this phenomenon, here’s an example with fake Michael Jackson covers. Notice too that many covers on YouTube have been removed and that the audio in the video below has been partially cut! Proof that YouTube has already taken steps to protect artists:

Facing AI: What measures will YouTube put in place in 2025?

To counter this AI-driven plagiarism phenomenon, as well as the spread of deepfakes of artists and celebrities, YouTube will roll out several actions aimed at protecting content creators:

  • Image management technology testing: Starting in early 2025, YouTube will test its new technology with top-tier celebrities, including award-winning actors and star NBA and NFL athletes. These public figures will be able to access tools that help them spot AI-generated content using their image and face.
  • Simplified takedown request process: In addition to identifying this AI content, the platform will provide a direct and effective way for creators to request the removal of content deemed inappropriate or unauthorized. This approach is part of an effort to strengthen the protection of artists’ privacy.
  • Collecting feedback: Participating celebrities will provide valuable feedback on how effective the tools are, allowing YouTube to make adjustments before expanding access to this technology for other creators and artists.

YouTube and CAA: The importance of this collaboration

CAA’s role in this partnership is essential. The agency, known for its commitment to artists’ rights, has invested in CAA Vault, a service that digitizes and securely stores talents’ digital likenesses. By partnering with CAA, YouTube aims to integrate these professionals’ expertise to create solutions that truly address artists’ concerns about new AI technologies.

Neal Mohan, YouTube CEO, said: “A strong partnership is essential to approach AI responsibly. We’re delighted to collaborate with CAA, an organization that shares our commitment to empowering artists.”

Bryan Lourd, CEO and co-chair of CAA, added: “Our conversations about AI focus on ethics and talent rights. We applaud YouTube’s leadership in creating an artist-respecting solution that fundamentally aligns with our goals.”

A commitment to an ethical future?

This initiative marks an important step toward a future where artists have better control over their image in a constantly evolving digital world. By engaging with influential talent and developing responsible tools, YouTube hopes not only to protect artists, but also to promote ethical and creative use of AI.

This partnership represents a major step forward for the future of creators on YouTube. Maybe the era of deepfakes, fake news, and parodies will soon be over? Share your thoughts in the comments!
