Who is Cyrano de Bergerac?
The hero of Edmond Rostand’s play, first staged in 1897, Cyrano is a cadet of Gascony, a poet and a swordsman, with an enormous nose and an even larger heart. Secretly in love with his cousin Roxane, he lends his words to the handsome, tongue-tied Christian so that Christian can win her, and he dies without ever confessing. His tirade about his own nose, the balcony scene and his last word, panache, are among the most quoted moments in the theater. English speaking audiences know the story from many versions, from the 1950 film that won José Ferrer an Academy Award to Steve Martin’s modern comedy Roxanne.
