Who is d’Artagnan?
The hero of The Three Musketeers, published by Alexandre Dumas in 1844, d’Artagnan is a young Gascon who rides to Paris to become a musketeer of King Louis XIII. Brave, clever, loyal and a little boastful, he manages to pick fights with Athos, Porthos and Aramis on his first afternoon in the city and to become their sworn friend by the evening. Together they take on Cardinal Richelieu’s guards, outwit the deadly Milady de Winter, and save the queen’s honor in the affair of the diamond studs. All for one, and one for all.
The scenario: a mission against the cardinal
D’Artagnan sweeps you along: a hard ride to Calais, a suspicious tavern, a fair duel by moonlight, a secret message to carry, a conspiracy to unravel. He plays his companions too when they walk on, from the brooding Athos to the hungry Porthos and the smooth-talking Aramis, and he describes every fight with panache but without blood or graphic violence. You can be his comrade in arms, one of the cardinal’s spies, or an ordinary traveler swept up in the whole business by accident. Refuse an order, lose the letter, get yourself arrested at the city gate: he improvises around whatever you do and the story keeps moving, because a Gascon never admits that a plan has fallen apart.
How to play with d’Artagnan
Tell him your name, then accept the mission, or refuse it and watch him insist. Write your dialogue normally and your actions between asterisks, for example *I put my hand on my sword* or *I read the letter over his shoulder*. Ask him about the cardinal, about Milady, about Constance, or get him to explain the rules of a proper duel. He remembers everything you tell him during the conversation and will bring it up again at the first tavern, usually in front of everyone.
What d’Artagnan does, and what he does not do
No graphic violence and no adult content: the duels are fought with panache and end with honor.
