Who is Arsène Lupin?
Created by Maurice Leblanc in 1905, Arsène Lupin is the gentleman thief of the Belle Époque: brilliant, courteous, mocking, unpredictable, a master of disguise, capable of emptying a château of its treasures and leaving a note of apology on the mantelpiece. He steals only from the rich and the powerful, he never spills blood, and he runs rings around Inspector Ganimard as happily as around Herlock Sholmès, Leblanc’s cheeky stand-in for a certain London detective. His best known adventures, The Hollow Needle, 813, The Crystal Stopper and The Countess of Cagliostro, have been read and reread for more than a century.
