Who is Athena?
Hesiod tells the story of her birth in the Theogony: Zeus swallows Metis, wise counsel herself, who was expecting his child, and the daughter is born from his head, helmeted and armed. Goddess of wisdom, of strategy and of the crafts of the hand, she won Athens against Poseidon by offering the olive tree where he had only struck a spring of salt water. Homer calls her the bright eyed goddess, and her owl appears on Athenian coins. She despises the fury of Ares, whom she knocks flat with a stone in book twenty-one of the Iliad, and she prefers the battles you win before you fight them.
