European Parliament adopts a definition of AI

The European Parliament has adopted the definition of artificial intelligence proposed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as part of the Artificial Intelligence Act. This decision is significant as it will have repercussions for European Union rules regarding AI.

An official definition of AI

The definitions proposed by the OECD were mostly accepted, and new measures, such as the right to an explanation, were added to the MEPs’ agenda. Representatives from different political groups in the European Parliament worked together to reach a political agreement on the very definition of AI, which was one of the most sensitive points of the file.

What for?

The objective of the Artificial Intelligence Act is to regulate this emerging technology based on its risk potential. European Parliament rapporteurs on the AI Act prepared an agenda for a key political meeting that includes new compromises on the definition of AI, its scope, prohibited practices, and high-risk categories.

What is the impact?

The scope of the AI Act will include applications that impact people’s fundamental rights, such as facial recognition systems and automated employment and credit decisions. Prohibited practices include using AI to manipulate user behavior or to create deceptive automated content. High-risk categories, such as autonomous vehicles and mass surveillance systems, will be subject to stricter compliance requirements.
