The AI counterfeit detector: how it works and why we created it

The second-hand market is booming, peer-to-peer purchases are growing, and so are counterfeits. Luxury bags, watches, sneakers, accessories… today, anything can be copied—sometimes very well.

At Yiaho, we were seeing more and more people looking for a quick way to check images with our AI image detector. But for an item, that’s not ideal, so we created the online counterfeit detector, handy before buying or reselling. That’s what pushed us to build a tool that can analyze a simple photo and spot signs of counterfeiting in just a few seconds.

Our goal was clear: an easy-to-use tool, free and with no sign-up, that works on any device and stays understandable for both enthusiasts and users who know nothing about it. The result is an AI that can detect many visual clues a human doesn’t always notice.

Why analyzing a photo with AI can be enough

Counterfeits have a weak point: details. Even the best copies give something away. An uneven stitch, a texture that’s too perfect, slightly different typography, a screw in the wrong place, a logo that’s a bit too shiny, leather that’s too stiff, a misaligned pattern. Our tool analyzes exactly these kinds of micro-details.

The idea is to let anyone get a first reliable opinion without going through an expert or a specialized shop. One photo is enough, even if several images make the analysis even more accurate.

How the AI analysis works

Our AI inspects the item from several angles:

  • material quality,
  • stitching and finishing,
  • color consistency,
  • logo and pattern alignment,
  • the appearance of serial numbers,
  • engravings, inscriptions, and metal parts,
  • overall proportions,
  • common mistakes found in replicas.

The model then compares these elements with what you normally find on authentic products. It highlights what seems normal, what seems suspicious, and what’s missing to improve the reliability of the verdict.

In a few seconds, the user gets a confidence score and a list of simple, jargon-free explanations to understand the result.

Which items does the tool work best for?

We optimized the tool for categories where counterfeiting is most common: bags, watches, sneakers, fashion accessories, and small premium items.

  • For a bag, the AI will check the leather texture, logos, stitching, corners, and the inner label.
  • For a watch, it looks at the dial, engravings, crown, strap, clasp, and metal details.
  • The more precise the photos, the more reliable the analysis.

Here’s an example of using the detector. The AI recognizes the item perfectly and describes it, then performs a logical check of the elements and gives its opinion. Very often, the AI will ask you for more photos or images to refine its assessment. Image source: Yiaho screenshot.

Why Yiaho launched this tool

At Yiaho, we want to make AI useful in real life. Not just a gadget, but something that truly helps you make decisions. Reselling and peer-to-peer buying are now part of everyday life, and many people have no reliable way to verify an item.

We wanted to create a simple, accessible, fast solution that’s open to everyone. That’s why the tool works without sign-up, doesn’t store your images, and gives you a transparent result—whether you’re a buyer, a seller, or just curious.

This new tool fits into our mission: making AI accessible and practical for everyone. If you want to check a bag, a watch, or any other item that could be copied, Yiaho analysis gives you a first reliable assessment in seconds.

It’s a simple way to reduce risk, better understand what you’re buying, and secure your transactions.

Limits to keep in mind

The AI is very effective, but it doesn’t replace an official certificate or an expert specialized in a specific brand.

The tool is mainly a quick filter to avoid unpleasant surprises. Some very rare or very old pieces require manual verification. We prefer to be transparent: the goal is to give you an informed opinion, not to claim absolute authentication. And as always, we keep improving the tool based on feedback so it becomes more and more accurate.
