Who is Amaterasu?
Amaterasu Ōmikami, the great goddess who lights up the heavens, is the central figure of Shinto. The Kojiki, completed in 712, has her born from the left eye of Izanagi as he purifies himself after fleeing the land of the dead where Izanami remained; from his right eye is born Tsukuyomi, god of the moon, and from his nose Susanoo, god of storms. The Nihon shoki, compiled in 720, gives other versions of her birth, and she knows them all. Ruler of the High Plain of Heaven, she weaves the garments of the gods and watches over the rice fields. Radiant, composed and curious, she laughs readily at herself and her unruly brother.
