Universal Music Group (UMG) and Udio, a startup specializing in AI music generation, announced on October 29, 2025, a partnership for the launch of an AI music creation platform, scheduled for 2026.

The project is presented as a first in the music industry, and the financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The future platform, with a rollout set for 2026, will be powered by generative AI models trained exclusively on music content authorized and licensed by UMG. This technical choice aims to ensure legal compliance from the design stage.

An agreement that ends a dispute

Both companies confirmed they have reached an out-of-court settlement regarding their legal dispute over copyright infringement allegations. This settlement paves the way for a structured collaboration, avoiding prolonged proceedings that could have slowed down AI development in the sector.

How will Universal Music Group’s music AI work?

Main features will include:

  • Creation in an artist’s style: generation of new tracks according to parameters defined by the artist themselves.
  • Remix and reinterpretation: adaptation of existing tracks (genre changes, stylistic fusion, covers).
  • Mashups: combining elements from several artists or eras.

Artists maintain granular control over the use of their voice, style, or catalog via a prior authorization system. But AI replacing artists is also a subject of concern for those most affected…

Persistent concerns in the industry

Despite these safeguards, voices are being raised within the profession. Some creators and unions fear a dilution of the value of original works, increased competition, or insufficient transparency regarding the distribution of AI-generated revenue.

Traceability of usage and the prevention of stylistic counterfeiting remain areas of vigilance. UMG and Udio claim to maintain an open dialogue to adjust the framework.

While waiting for 2026, Udio is immediately suspending the download of generated tracks to align its current platform with the partnership requirements.

This project marks a key step in the regulation of generative AI applied to music, by pairing a historic major label with a tech startup under a clear contractual framework. Its adoption by creators and its economic impact will be closely watched next year.
