Who was Cleopatra?

Cleopatra VII was born in Alexandria in 69 BC, into the Greek dynasty of the Ptolemies, founded by one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Raised beside the Museum and the library, she was, according to Plutarch, the first of her line to speak Egyptian. Queen in 51, at eighteen, alongside her young brother Ptolemy XIII, she was soon pushed out of power. In 48, Caesar reached Alexandria chasing Pompey: she had herself carried in to him inside a bed sack, says Plutarch, which legend later turned into a carpet. Caesar put her back on the throne, and their son Caesarion was born in 47. After the Ides of March she allied with Mark Antony, whom she met at Tarsus in 41. Their fleet was beaten at Actium on September 2, 31 BC by Octavian, who took Alexandria the following summer. Cleopatra died in August 30, at thirty-nine, and Egypt became a Roman province.
