Jeff Bezos to create his own generative AI to compete with ChatGPT

Amazon Nova AI

According to a recent revelation by Business Insider, Amazon, under the leadership of Jeff Bezos, is diving headfirst into the generative AI race. The company is working on an AI model with advanced “reasoning” capabilities, aiming to rival industry leaders like OpenAI (creator of ChatGPT) and Anthropic.

While Jeff Bezos, the tycoon at the helm of Amazon, seemed to be lagging behind in this booming field until now, he now intends to catch up with his competitors and position his company as a key player.

For Amazon, the future clearly lies in chatbots and the development of smarter AI capable of transforming the user experience and boosting competitiveness.

Alexa+: An improved version of their artificial intelligence

Amazon isn’t starting from scratch: the company recently unveiled Alexa+, an ambitious evolution of its well-known AI integrated into its smart speakers.

Leading this new generative AI project is Rohit Prasad, a top Indian engineer, key figure in Alexa’s development, and architect of this next-generation AI. With Alexa+, Amazon wants to offer a smoother, smarter experience capable of meeting growing user expectations in an increasingly competitive market.

Nova AI: When will Amazon’s generative AI be available?

According to available information, this new model could launch as early as June 2025 under the Nova brand, which Amazon already uses to showcase its generative AI advancements. This new version aims to directly compete with the powerful models from OpenAI and Anthropic, which are widely popular with both the general public and professionals.

The company is betting on a delicate balance between response speed and deep thinking capabilities—a combination that requires significant investment. Indeed, while these models perform better, they are also slower and more expensive to develop. Amazon is thus looking to optimize both profitability and performance, a technical and strategic challenge that could redefine its place in the tech ecosystem.

Amazon and Anthropic: Competitor and… partner!

Notably, Amazon isn’t just challenging Anthropic in the generative AI space: the two companies also maintain a cooperative relationship. Amazon has invested no less than $16 billion in Anthropic, which recently launched Claude 3.7 Sonnet, a model recognized for its advanced reasoning capabilities.

At the same time, the two giants are collaborating on the development of specialized AI chips, a partnership that could accelerate innovation on both sides. This strategic alliance illustrates the complexity of current dynamics in the AI sector, where competition and collaboration are intertwined.
