Good or bad news for users? In a recent post on its blog, Meta revealed a strategic shift in the development of its artificial intelligence within the European Union. The company now plans to leverage its users’ public posts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger to refine its AI models.
This decision marks a notable change, as Meta had until now claimed it did not use content from its social networks to train its algorithms.

In practical terms, this means Instagram photo captions, public comments on Facebook, and even interactions with Meta AI, the chatbot launched in Europe at the end of March, can be used to improve the performance of the virtual assistant and Llama AI.
Private messages, such as those exchanged on WhatsApp, remain excluded, thanks to their “end-to-end encryption,” as the company claims.
An AI better suited to Europeans?
Meta justifies this move by the need to create a more powerful AI that is better adapted to Europeans’ cultural specificities.
According to the company, leveraging a wide variety of public data will allow its models to better grasp the diversity and nuances of communities across the continent. “This training will help better support millions of people and businesses in Europe by teaching our generative AI models to better understand and reflect their cultures, languages, and history,” reads Meta’s official website.
A necessary step to catch up with OpenAI and Gemini?
This decision could also be seen as Meta’s attempt to close the gap with competitors like OpenAI and Google, whose models such as ChatGPT and Gemini dominate the conversational AI market.
By relying on the colossal amount of data generated by its billions of users, Meta hopes to speed up the development of its virtual assistant and offer more competitive features. This strategic choice, while risky for its image, seems unavoidable to stay in the innovation race, where big data and the volume of training data play a crucial role.
A right to opt out for users?
Aware of privacy concerns, Meta says users will have a say. That was indeed the condition for compliance with the European GDPR.
In the coming days, Europeans will receive a notification informing them of this new policy, along with a link to a form to object to the use of their data.
The company promises the form will be easy to use and that any opt-out request, past or future, will be respected. This comes as Meta faces criticism over its practices, notably in the context of a major antitrust trial in the United States.
