Why is OpenAI’s Sam Altman giving $1 million to Donald Trump?

Sam Altman AI

A bold, strategic, or conventional move? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced a $1 million donation to Donald Trump’s inauguration fund.

While in France this might be seen as clear political support, in the United States, it raises questions about the strategic relationship between the tech sector and the new Trump administration.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman & Trump: A surprising financial backing?

Sam Altman recently revealed his intention to donate $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund.

This initiative is part of an effort by several tech companies to build constructive relationships with the Trump administration as the country prepares for major shifts in policy and tech regulation.

It should be noted, however, that Sam Altman’s political journey is evolving:

  • In 2019, he organized a fundraiser to support Democratic candidate Andrew Yang.
  • In May 2020, he donated $250,000 to an organization (American Bridge 21st Century) that supported candidate Joe Biden.

In the United States, unlike in France, it’s common to see political figures switch sides without being judged as “flip-floppers.” This flexibility allows individuals to adapt to changing political and economic contexts and shows that supporting a candidate can be strategic… rather than ideological.

Yet, OpenAI is full of Democrats!

Despite this $1 million donation, OpenAI—the company famous since the release of ChatGPT—has recruited executives with experience in Democratic administrations. These include:

  • Chris Lehane, former White House lawyer under Bill Clinton.
  • Aaron Chatterji, former senior economist on Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.

This recruitment could reflect a desire to skillfully navigate a complex political landscape while pursuing an AI-focused mission. Is OpenAI trying to appear politically neutral?

Trump’s vision for AI

In a written statement, Altman expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to “lead our country into the AI era,” stating that he wants to support the president’s efforts to ensure America remains at the forefront of technological innovation.

As a friend of Elon Musk, who launched Grok, it’s certain that Donald Trump is considered “AI compatible” by tech giants. One can imagine that as long as AI is made in the United States, Donald Trump is fine with it. And when it comes to regulation, he might be less finicky than they are in Europe!

A global trend among tech giants?

Sam Altman is not alone in this move. Companies like Amazon and Meta, which have each announced a $1 million donation to the same inauguration fund, show a trend among tech giants to strengthen their ties with the Trump administration.

This collaborative approach might be purely strategic—this is the US, after all!

It’s also worth noting that Donald Trump has had strong disagreements with Amazon boss Jeff Bezos regarding the Washington Post’s media coverage. He has also sharply criticized Meta’s practices, accusing its platforms of censoring conservative voices.

Ultimately, tech giants in the US are taking a step toward Donald Trump, whether out of opportunity or for the sake of their business. Regardless of their goal, these moves certainly contribute to the overall dynamism of the United States, which remains and will likely continue to be at the forefront of AI in the coming years.
